How to write a DJ bio promoters actually read
A good DJ bio answers in a few lines who you are, what you play, where you are from and where you have played. Write in the third person, open with your strongest line, name two or three real dates or clubs and finish with what you are releasing now. Always keep a short and a medium version.
Promoters read the bio after they hear the mix. If it is long, generic or full of adjectives, they move on to the next name on the list.
The structure that works
First sentence: name, genre and city. Second: what sets you apart, such as a residency, a label, a project or a specific sound. Third: concrete proof, like clubs, festivals or radio shows you have played.
Close with what is happening now: a release, a tour, a new residency. Skip lists of twenty influences; two references are enough to place your sound.
Three lengths, three uses
The short version, up to 40 words, is for line-ups and posts. The medium one, 80 to 120 words, is your EPK bio. The long one, 200 to 300 words, is for press and festivals that want more context.
On EPK Social you write the bio in PT, EN and ES and the kit shows each visitor the right language. No need to send three different files.
Mistakes that cost bookings
A first-person bio that reads like a diary, empty adjectives like “unique” and “amazing”, dates from five years ago and text pasted from Instagram. A bio that never names the genre also fails: promoters need to know if you fit their night.
Bio checklist
- Name, genre and city in the first sentence
- Two or three real proof points (clubs, festivals, labels)
- Third person and short sentences
- Short and medium versions ready
- Updated in the last six months
Write the bio once, paste it into your EPK and let the link do the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Should a DJ bio be in the first or third person?
Third person. It is the format promoters, festivals and press copy straight into line-ups and announcements without rewriting.
What is the ideal length for a DJ bio?
For your EPK, 80 to 120 words. Also keep a version of up to 40 words for line-ups and a long one for press.
Do I need my bio in other languages?
If you want to play abroad or at festivals with international crowds, yes. On EPK Social your bio can be in Portuguese, English and Spanish on the same link.
